IR TV Review: WILL TRENT - EPISODE 2 [ABC]
Will Trent as a character is about ebb and flow. He moves ahead and then get pushed back a couple steps. But despite this, he does not stop trying. Forgiveness or acceptance is an interesting diatribe in his world because he is not looking for redemption or understanding. He wants just to live and work in peace but also doesn't want any one in his way too much. But he is loyal to a cadence of life. Episode 2 of the 1st season continues to show this. The coincidence of 3 of the characters featured coming from the same orphanage in a way is a little too happenstance but we will see where it goes.
Mark Paul Gosselaar (looking completely different than usual) was a crux in the first episode and seemingly a bully over Trent but there is a moment later of empathy which shows a deeper pain there (though considering how brutish and unlikable he was coming out of the gate it might be interesting if he can move back across the line). Erika Christensen as Angie is continuing to build as a character but a strategy move by Trent shows an interesting side of her which deepens the progression in a great way. She is a good cop, wants love, has reason to hide but also knows that the way Trent works creates an imbalance of trust with her, even if he doesn't mean for it to be that way. As the episode runs to a close (not giving away any spoilers of the mystery from the first episode), the character beats (even with Trent's at-first unwanted rescue) ring strong which hopefully resonate for the rest of the season without losing traction. B+
