IR TV Review: THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT - EPISODE 3 (“The Streets Of Mos Espa”) [Lucasfilm/Disney+]

The texture of power and loss continues to build in Episode 3 of "The Book Of Boba Fett" entitled "The Streets Of Mos Espa". Robert Rodriguez returns to helm this episode after sitting out Episode 2. His stamp is here and one can see his intent and overview from productions like "Spy Kids" and "Battle Angel Alita" but the series doesn't feel as edgy or heartfelt as it could. "The Mandalorian" had something this doesn't. Only in one moment with a Rodriguez collaborator does it approach what it might be. Rodriquez does do odes back which definitely give a "Return Of The Jedi" vibe. But then other elements seem haphazard. There is a fight sequence that works because a brutality comes out but a chase sequence (which feels like it moves too slow) seems like an opportunity for cinematic flourish which comes off stilted. Granted they are working on Stagecraft but there seems to be sometimes a lack of dynamic within the perspective and motion. Another issue with the series is that Temuera Morrison (while correct in his connection to canon) is not very emotive or dynamic a an actor. He and Ming-Na Wen (who comes off better) don't seems as threatening or looming in personality as they could be.

The problem is that the characters can't just start killing people or they won't be empathetic. They also need a crew that instills fear. The recruits are alright but again the edge is not there. There is only one character that really works but his use almost is wasted (unless it is integrated later). The flashbacks continue to explore the enlightenment of Boba post-Sarlacc which again points to something he has to prove. However that steeliness of negotiation seems to be lacking a bit in his character (in his quest to be "fair"). The story that begs to be told though is that of the young Boba (hopefully they can bring back the now adult Daniel Logan who played the young Boba in the prequels). The formative years of Boba really do need to be examined and Logan voiced Boba on "The Clone Wars" [plus he has recently indicated interest in returning to live action for it if the production was so inclined). Jon Favreau is writing most of the scripts so he does have a plan (obviously the story has a alot of input from Rodriguez) but Filoni's input on deep cuts is slightly missing (as he is likely working more on "Ahsoka" currently). The question is are the overseers spreading themselves too thin where the great momentum that was created by "The Mandalorian" gets dileniated by a world that needs more fingerprints that they can provide. Time will tell. B-
