IR TV Review: STAR TREK - PICARD - EPISODE 1 (“The Star Gazer”) [Paramount+-S2]

The ending of last season propelled the idea of "Picard" to a different realm of existence and approach. Its texture was based on the realization but also embracement of mortality. It allowed the path to go on while perhaps renewing Jean Luc's approach to life. While Episode 1 of the 2nd season entitled "The Star Gazer" makes reference to a TNG episode which spoke to a crucial part in Picard's command development, it also showed a crack in his veneer which is part of the point. Without giving too much away, the gang from the previous season has been reconfigured but still around with their accomplishments from last season seemingly being rewarded (and rightfully so). Even Picard comes off as content initially but the first few scenes reflect down that he still can't enjoy the twilight of his life and it is disconcerting because it a great fix. Of course there wouldn't be a continuing series if he was content but this season and final next season point toward an endgame of some sort. The progression and eventual conclusion of this specific ep shows though what lies in store still needs to be laid out. The pre premiere teaser alone for the show speak to where they are going. "The Star Gazer" as an introduction is about setting up the season while seemingly omitting (at least at this point) the impact from last season. Time will tell. B
