IR TV Review: BIG SKY - EPISODE 2 (“Nowhere To Run”) [ABC]

bs2a-review.jpg

The issue that plagues "Big Sky" is an absence of intrigue. It is a beautiful setting and yet it doesn't seem to have a true identity. The characters seem smart but they also seem to miss things. The conceit of the series and why the bad guys per se do what they do has a distinct ring of plot convenience to it. The darkness of the characters is apparent but the build of their illness and behavior per se is not. Even dogma has some semblance of structure. This is one of many aspects that seem to fall flat. After the cliffhanger of the pilot episode, one would expect the tension to ratchet up or at least create some pace in the 2nd episode (entitled "Nowhere To Run" --which is an apt metaphor). Neither is apparent here. Kathryn Winnick's half-marshal/half pissed-off wife has some more power but her deductive skills do not back this up. It is almost as if all the characters are just missing their points but a couple yards and yet still stay on the path. Again, it is too bad considering some of the pedigree. This reviewer is not sure if it is because this was built during the pandemic or even shot then but it seems to be missing a lot of the core intrinsic core elements that would make a series watchable. Many series fail but can boast some particular bright spots but this one just isn't cutting it. Right now it just is misfiring on all cylinders without taking advantage of any possibilities it has at its disposal. D-
