Border Thoughts & Beach Possibilities: Baja By The Sea 2010 - Review
The persistance of Mexico right over the border predicates the necessity of a type of Spring Break perception. However with the recent travel warnings, many visitors from the US will not make their way over the border despite deals that persist. But it simply is a matter of will.
Baja By The Sea, held in Embarcadero Marina Park in San Diego, right across from the Convention Center that houses Comic Con every year, offers a bit of what lies across the border while allowing for a different feeling of food and drink.Rosarito, barely 60 miles below the border, has grown immensely in the past 15 years from a small stop on the road to roaring beach town. One of the old school rocks of this area is the cozy Rosarito Beach Hotel where the spacious room leads to the gentle spilling of the waves..and a bit of tequila.Aside from the memories reminded, the aspect of brew always retains a wanton figure. Two Mexican beers, which are not found as readily state-wise, offer a distinctification and difference that, at times, Dos Equis just can't accomplish.
La Bohemia, brewed out of Monterrey Mexico, has a great presentation with a smooth aftertaste for those loving a simple but effective beer without too much impact.
Cerveza Tijuana, from the border city, has much more kick especially in the intention of its Morena which has a tart aftertaste with a heavier thickness in groove.
Tecate, a little farther inland east along the border, offers different culinary aspects and a welcome presence. Los Portones, with its smiling owner, offers a bit of organic while not sacrificing the taste with the impact of its creamy carrot soup and a bit of tangy, thick potato salad.Ensenada, just a little further down the border from Rosarito, has gained a perception of a fishing destination boasting an exceptional marina and a persistance of seafood. The extensive cross-section of events in the immediate area including the Fiesta de la Vendimilia in late summer as well as the world renown Baja 500 make this oceanside destination perfect as base camp with many distinctive hotels like Estero Beach Resort and the Hotel Coral & Marina offering great rates.
In the same hemisphere of thought, the Baja Seafood Expo, which takes place in late September, offers a great cross-section of possibilities for the oceanic and culinary enthusiast. While the influx does cater to commercial aspects for buyers of seafood, the consecutive Copa Gobernador in its second year complements Ensenada as a sports fishing destination. The Fish & Seafood Festival along with the Gastronomic Contest flutters in consistent motion as companion events giving a grand vista from which to enjoy the sights.Baja California, though recently besieged by unforseen circumstances including the earthquake in Mexicali, are looking to draw back visitors in droves with the kind of deals that make other parts of Central Mexico such a draw. While building up the tourism industry especially in this ecomony is an up-hill battle, the proximity of Baja's possibilities to the US via driving cannot be denied. It is simply a matter of choice.
