IR TV Review: TRUE DETECTIVE - NIGHT COUNTRY - EPISODE 4 [HBO/Max]

The reasoning of choice sometimes loses track when fate comes into play. With Episode 4 of "True Detective: Night Country", the idea of certain destinies as an inevitable conclusion are put to play, whether they be practical or mystical. Trooper Navarro (Kali Reis) wants to believe she can affect change by simply being stalwart in her path and yet she cannot save those who are closest to her. in this episode, rage and regret take a very visceral form for the character. Reis hits it head on with vulnerability and fire, both at inoppurtune moments which is part of the point. Chief Danvers (Jodie Foster) by comparison, just can't get out of her own way. She is like a bull in the china shop not really seeing the damage she is causing since she believes she is doing everything for the greater good.

Both Officer Peter and his deputy father (John Hawkes) seem to not understand the connection they have in front of them instead searching for some other kind of validation. The video Danvers and Navarro found on a cell phone from their previous investigation leads them back and forrh trying to understand why certain people both wandered into the ice but also what motivated them. The ending of the episode builds over Christmas Eve with both missed chances and unfortunate consequences. One sequence in a show drift with one of the main characters is both telling and emblematic for how the mystery they are trying to solve might ultimately blow up in their faces. There is a feeling of dread that something is waiting for them. As they enter a location at the end of the episode, it is about coming face to face with the past. It might create more questions but it also shows that what is happening might not be singular. B+
