IR TV Review: THE ARK - EPISODE 4 (“We Weren’t Supposed To Be Awake”) [SyFy]
The motivation of the inner-self melds into the idea of what needs to be accomplished versus how people want to be seen. With Episode 4 of "The Ark": "We Weren't Supposed To Be Awake", the actions of previous episodes show a cause and effect which interesting enough in that it plays into the psychology of what the crew thinks they should be doing. This is an interesting construct that "Star Trek" has used but here points to the vision of the subconscious in terms of what life is and how people make decisions. The aspect of this episode builds in the progression not necessarily of conscience but of guilt versus logic. The secrets that the crew keeps from each other also makes them more human while making them much more flawed.
Beyond this, the placing of Lt. Garnet though specific details makes more and more sense though the travesty that has befallen the ship doesn't seem like it would have been done on purpose. Instincts that are reflected in these visions are simply additions to certain behavioral inclinations that we see across the board for many of these characters. That said, it is a great plot device because it shows things to the audience that the other characters might never know which gives us an insight otherwise unknown. Some are simply societal like a jealous lover or a protective mother. Others can be contexts of fantasy or authority, The coolness of this episode is how it unravels these elements creating a pendulum of what is real and imagined before it is subsequently pulled back together by the force of logic (which ironically enough is what causes the problem to be solved). The twist is not what pushed this on them but also what might be waiting outside. B+
