IR TV Review: STAR TREK - STRANGE NEW WORLDS - EPISODE 7 (“Those Old Scientists”) [Paramount+-S2]

The aspect of how a crossover works is always interesting but using the time continuum is always a tricky perspective. The way the idea works here does use a plot device which has served the "Star Trek" universe well but also has allowed it to play with expectations and perceptions, especially those that have yet to be. With Episode 5 of Season 2 of "Strange New Worlds" entitled "Those Old Scientists" , the narrative interestingly sees Boimler and Mariner from "Lower Decks" interact with the pre-Kirk Enterprise crew. It is very interesting and some wonderful moments come out of the episode. This is true Trek but it does require deep cut knowledge so that is both good and disconnecting.

The great thing is that this is beautiful fan service without losing the idea of what Trek is. The idea of perspective and perception is wonderfully done with every single character almost. There are no big battle scenes. This is simply an episode about hanging out with your heroes and finding who they are without revealing anything that might influence judgements. Saying anymore would take the joy out of the episode as well as give away spoilers. Suffice to say, this is "Strange New Worlds" at its best, knowing its characters in and out but with a sense of nostalgia, loss and joy that almost can only be seen in hindsight. A
