IR TV Review: STAR TREK - PRODIGY - EPISODE 5 (“Terra Firma”) [Paramount+]
The influence of betrayal versus acceptance becomes a more distinct pressure in Episode 5 of "Star Trek: Prodigy" entitled "Terra Firma" with the character of Gwyn coming face-to-face to a decision she needs to make. She has been trained by her supposed father for a greater calling but like Thanos to Gamora in the Marvel Universe, there is a distinct difference in perspective of what is to be gained but also what might be lost. Lost on a planet and unsure of the status of their vessel is what originally drew Dal and Gwyn together. This is examined but also rekindled in what will likely be one of the more dynamic relationships in the series but also the most combative.
Gwyn wants to lead but Dal's need to win to satisfy his ego still remains a point of pride even though she is the better choice for captain. The character of Holo Janeway in terms of what memories she retains is interesting but not overly explored. While the intent of course of the mission shown makes sense (and actually might have some repercussions in what is being shown in "Discovery"), the reasoning and ultimate endgame here is a little muddled versus "Lower Decks" which even with its wide ranging episodes seems a little more connected. Granted this series might be more built as a introduction for a new generation of younger would-be trekkers. That said, the themes especially as this episode ends point to a more mythic dynamic, yet there is still much of a path to be layed to move forward. B-
