IR TV Review: SHE HULK - ATTORNEY AT LAW - EPISODE 7 (“The Retreat”) [Marvel/Disney+]

The context of how “She Hulk” functions relies on the aspect of self worth within the character. The subterfuge of the plot is interesting because it is how the ideal of Jennifer Walters that resides in She Hulk helps define how she might respond in any given situation. After her interaction with Joshua at her less-than-friend Lulu's wedding, one hopes Walters would catch a break but the series and the plot must move on in a way. In Episode 7, the reversal comes in an interesting almost “Anger Management” set up which again defies a certain expectation but it works because the integration is just odd enough that it feels genuine. Again that is because of Tatiana Maslany's talent. For someone who can play such dark elements (see “Orphan Black”), the exercise of a superhero show disguised as a situation comedy of sorts is due to the writing but lies in her control to play with the form.

During the wedding party when she lets down her guard (after a little bit of drinking) one sees certain aspects of She Hulk being interchanged with Walters. That is key. Again the aspect of Tim Roth (as Blonsky) in his own way is the same kind of irony in Maslany brings. This sidetrack works very well though some details are being held back. The intent is being based in the misdirect while keeping her altruistic and naïve enough while still being powerful. The sad element is that some kind of trauma will probably have to engage an awakening in her though hopefully the current tone can be maintained for a bit longer. A-
