IR TV Review: A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW - EPISODE 7 [Showtime/Paramount+]
In the lead up to the episode before the season finale, "A Gentleman In Moscow" has to gestate into an element of an endgame. Maintaining in the arena of the late 1940s, Episode 7 sees the death of Stalin which ushers in a different change and a struggle for power. Of course within the hotel, Count Rostov (Ewan McGregor) goes on with his life. Sofia is growing up and becoming a known pianist. Her perspective makes her slightly different but sometimes is at odds with party perspective which requires Rostov to protect her. A possibility which was apparent perhaps before is not as much at the forefront in this episode. An oppotunity presents itself and yet it is one of those progressions which is a make or break element which requires Rostov to take a stand but this time he is much more aware of those around him.
The interesting progression is the perspective on both sides, especially that of Oslip who understands his role now in the progression of time. Situations have changed and the roll of the dice can be arbitrary. Rostov is interestingly enough a patriot but understands Russia's flaws. He appreciates what other places can offer but also what he wants to see within that which he considers his home. Sofia is not old enough to understand so her perception of what happened before she came to him is clouded by what people tell her. Another vision from the past complicates this but also provides a coda to the helplessness that Rostov must go through, even though he might have a clearer choice than most. The final episode will dictate his path, whether to darkness or light, death or life, It just matters what is his true decision and intent and who he might bring down or up with him. B+
