Diets, Green and Pop: The 2009 Cable TCA Winter Press Tour

Cable and online are increasing their prevalence as the symbiosis of two mediums move towards each other. Cable was a brief interlay as CES made its way into the field of play in the winter cauldron while Crackle with its ramping style initiated a luncheon.

WeTV The luncheon launched the essence of "I Want To Save Your Life" from a more soft but firm perspective keyed in with what makes "The Biggest Loser" successful. The lunch which highlighted the gist of the show selected by host Charles Stuart Platkin (the named "Diet Detective") consisted of tomato with mozzarella followed by brown rice, asparagus and chicken. After three of the contestants talked about the process with the paradox of people eating in front of them, Platkin explained his approach to the show: "The objective was to send good messaging. They allowed us to put on a show that gives healthy messages. It constantly reminds an individual that this is their choice."

Sundance Channel Exec VP Laura Michalchyshyn announced a new series following fashion mogul Karl Lagerfield while welcoming talent from three shows coupled under "The Green" initiative. "Green Porno" is a series of shorts for the online area made by actress Isabella Rossellini showing her performance art sensibility in the abstraction of sex between animals and insects. This season here in focus is with ocean and marine. She explains the fascination: "I was always interested in animals since I was a little girl. [And] I knew sex was everybody's interest". She highlights her approach: "I play the animals and do very elaborate designs and costumes. I wanted to be Jane Goodall". When asked about the different sexual identities, she coys: "Anything is possible. Animals do more. Worms are hermaphrodites and they mate in the 69 position." For her, the anchovy is the most challenging. As far as her endgame with this creative endeavor: "My mission is to make people laugh. I felt that as a consumer of meat, fish or television, [I was] guilty." Another show in launch is "The Lazy Enviromentalist" which has host John Dorfman showing trendy people how to be green while not sacrificing style and productivity. He encapsulates the solution parameter: "This is how you live. We have some real cool solutions that might fit your life. A lot of it is about framing the issue for me."

Crackle This online portal of Sony is creating new material for Environmentalist" digital age. Like Sony Digital had done with the initial incarnation of "Robot Chicken", the key is making material which is "inside" with prevalence. David Faustino of Bud Bundy/"Married With Children" fame creates "Star-ving", an inside perception of life after the death of a show. Making fun of himself is a mockumentary style, he employs the talents of Corin Nemec from TV's exceptional but short run "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" as he traverses the downfalls of being former. Think of "The Two Coreys" with a little more debauchery, filth and hope. Also of note is "Angel Of Death" created by Ed Brubaker (who is on the fast track as he writes and develops "Sleeper" for Tom Cruise and Director Sam Raimi at Warner) where "Death Proof" star Zoe Bell spreads the action around in a violent way. This latter series debuts in February. Both create a balance of material that dependent on success could further express the medium's ability. Of course this is all dependent on advertising revenue. Thus the alternative to the networks continue to grow with a mix of art and new directions that continues to redefine the world.
