Conan: Cimmeria - Graphic Novel Review
The next vision of pop art is about putting perspectives on the perceptions of lore. The first part is signaled with a hero misunderstood, that of Conan and the narrative structure that sets to define him different than previous outings."Conan: Cimmeria" takes into account that most everyone has heard the progression of the infamous warrior. This story however places it in a paradoxical motion. Most compare him in elements to Genghis Khan. However what this outing seems to suggest is a much more deeper focused man who remembers his first girl and respects his mother. This is a different intersection than what has been shown before. There is a plenty of bloodletting to be sure but the story is framed within the journey of our warrior back into the Cimmerian Mountains from hence he came. He comes back drawn to what might be. The anchor of the story is Corrolan, a woman, who is caught in a blood feud. The art especially during the intimate scenes gives a great sense of lighting without overwhelming the story. The colors with the exception of the stories Conan relates about his exploits are muted. The side stories of specific interest revolve around the people his grandfather saved. The tales of the city where people were burned at the stake for the honor of a god plays both ways. Although the inclusion of an octopi loving cult is a little off subject, it is the political irony that Conan uses in balance with brute force that shows the way that the story could be told. Most people's thoughts of the warrior revolve around the Schwarzenegger interpretation which, while popular, according to the editor, is not a true embodiment of the character. The background shown which makes the origins even more interesting is about how Conan was born from Texas. The balance of the lone state mentality as aspects of honor and viciousness of cowboys paint straight into the lore and give the warrior depth. No man of great power ever was less than divisive in his tactics.
